4 Silent Dangers of Sleep Deprivation

Sleep Deprivation

With awareness being raised about almost every single health issue out there not much concern has been diverted towards lack of sleep depreciation. Surely, you’ve all heard the basics of ways to cope with sleep deprivation effects and the harmful effects it causes such as weight loss, dark circles under your eyes and many more. Everyone, including my 5 year old, knows about it but I’m positive not many of you are aware of the serious consequences that it causes.

The human body is quite fascinating, millions of things could be wrong with us without us having the faintest of ideas. People don’t figure out they have cancer till it reaches the last stage so don’t assume, just because you haven’t experienced any weird symptoms or feelings, that you’re fine.

Many of us take sleep for granted, some stay up all night due to school, while some of us have to complete office projects; thus, compromising on sleep. Surely one or two nights aren’t likely to make much of a difference but constantly missing out on your required amount of sleep may be extremely dangerous for your health. I thought I’d give many of you a heads up about what signs of sleep deprivation does to you in case you’re one of those who tend to get about less than 7 hours of sleep daily.

Weakened Immune System

When you sleep your brain produces anti bodies that fight off bacteria and all the viruses that attack your body without you even realizing it. When you don’t sleep your brain doesn’t get a chance to produce those cells. Hence, your immune system becomes weak and you find yourself being a victim of allergies, colds and coughs. It’s a horrible thing to have a weak immune system because you fall ill very often which can be particularly frustrating and annoying.

Sleep and Your Sex Drive

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you love sex then make sure not to ruin it by giving up on sleep. Sleep deprived men and women who report lower libidos have a tendency to have less enthusiasm for sex because of less energy and sleepiness. Men who experience the ill effects of sleep apnea could likewise be at danger for low sex drive and unusually low testosterone levels.

Diabetes Risk

Studies have shown that those who do not get sufficient sleep are likely to develop diabetes. While type 1 diabetes is caused due to insulin insufficiency, type 2 diabetes is caused due to our bodies being insulin resistant and requiring more insulin. Our body’s cells are powered by glucose and insulin allows glucose to enter our cells from our blood. In the event that the pancreas do not deliver insulin (as in type 1 diabetes), or the body’s cells no more react to insulin (as in type 2 diabetes), glucose stays in the blood as opposed to being utilized by the cells, bringing about anomalous high blood glucose, which is unsafe for the body.

The lesser you sleep, the more insulin resistant your body tends to become. This is the last thing you need these days because you already face numerous health risks from other food sources such as meat and dairy products.

Fertility Challenges

You have been trying to have kids for a long time but failing? Well, then there’s some bad news for you if you have been missing out on sleep. A recent survey have shown that men who don’t get enough sleep have lower sperm count by a ratio of 1:3 compared to those who sleep a good number of hours. Consistent interruptions with the day/night cycles can in the long run contribute towards certain complications in the reproductive system.

Most hormone emission is controlled by the circadian clock and rest is one of the occasions that majorly affects the day by day rhythms and levels discharged. Sufficient sleep permits the body to re-build those rhythms, subsequently, advancing the regulation of our reproductive hormones.

I’m positive many of you have heard elders rambling on and on about how heart diseases and strokes are linked to lack of sleep and how you become lethargic and so on. Hence, I thought I’d shed some light on some information that isn’t really out there in the open.
